The key difference between climate and weather is the measure of time.
The weather represents the state of the atmosphere over a very short period of time, while climate reflects the behavior of atmosphere over a period of 30 years or more.
In other words, consider climate as the whole football season, while the weather is just a few minutes of a single game.
Now, the length of time isn’t the only difference between them. There are several others.
Curious to know about them?
Then read on to find out what are the things that set weather apart from the climate. But first, let’s get acquainted with both of them.
What Is Weather?
Weather represents the short-term changes in the atmosphere and gives you an accurate idea of the current conditions of the atmosphere and its impact on human activities.
It is generally regarded as the combination of humidity, wind, temperature, visibility, cloudiness, brightness, precipitation and atmospheric pressure.
The weather can experience rapid changes. A sunny day can turn into a full-blown storm within hours or even minutes.
A simple way to remember the difference between weather and climate:
Climate is what you anticipate, for example, a hard and cold winter.
And the weather is what you receive, a cold day.
What Is Climate?
The climate is the pattern of weather over a long period of time in a specific region.
Climates can vary to a great extent in different parts of this world.
In some parts it is hot and rainfall occurs regularly, while in another part it is freezing cold and covered in snow half the year.
Scientists regard climate as the average weather for a particular area and time period.
For example, if a place is continuously cold, then it can be said that this particular area has a cold climate.
Like the weather, climate can also change.
But unlike the weather, the change occurs gradually and takes place over a very long period of time.
Although the boy takes his time to change, his transformation has a much larger impact than the weather.
For instance, due to global warming (which causes climate change); we are now witnessing the melting of glaciers. As a result, snow is falling in many areas where it has never fallen before.
Scientists determine the climate of an area:
by looking at its average of humidity, temperature, winds, precipitation, sunshine, fogginess, frost, windiness, hail storm and other components of the weather that takes place over a long period of time in that particular region.
Components of Weather and Climate
There are numerous components of weather. It consists of rain, blizzard, sunshine, winds, snow, hail, flooding, thunderstorms, heat waves, freezing rain and more.
On the other hand, the components of climate are average precipitation, humidity, windiness, temperature, sunshine and natural phenomena such as frost, hail storms over an extended period of time.
Impact of Human Activities on Climate and Weather
Scientists have offered ample proof that human activities have a huge impact on climate as well as the weather condition (but they aren’t Trump, so FAKE news).
Greenhouse gas emitted by human activities is primarily responsible for trapping heat in the atmosphere which in turn causes the temperature of the atmosphere to rise.
The greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, and methane are primarily responsible for the greenhouse effect, which ultimately results in global warming.
The greenhouse gases are also able to affect the frequency of extreme weather such as flooding, drought, high wind and extreme temperatures.
Why Is The Study Of Climate Important?
The study of climate is important, as millions of people around the world are affected by the increasing change in the climate.
Due to the ever-increasing global temperature sea levels are expected to rise and there may be more alteration in the local climate conditions.
A change in regional climate could have a devastating impact on the supplies of water, production of the food, and trees.
Human health and the entire ecosystem could get affected by the change in climate.
According to The National Academy of Sciences, the temperature of earth’s surface has been increased by around 1 Fahrenheit in the last century.
Hence, more and more study should be conducted on the climate change, its effect and what can we do to prevent that.
Who Makes The Prediction About The Climate And Weather?
In the United States of America, weather and climate forecasts are provided by the National Weather Service (NWS).
In order to provide weather forecasts and warnings, they use radar on the ground and images from satellites to collect data.
Afterward, they put all these data into the computer to get the weather forecasts.
Key Differences between the Weather and Climate
- Weather is the moment-wise state of the atmosphere, whereas climate is the average weather in the particular region.
- Weather can change pretty quickly. In contrast, climate can take decades to change.
- The climate is mainly influenced by precipitation and temperature. Conversely, the state of the weather is determined by humidity, cloudiness, and temperature.
- The weather study is termed as meteorology, while the study of climate is called climatology.
- Weather is basically the current state of the atmosphere, whereas climate implies the weather pattern of that particular region over a long period of time.
So, are Your Concepts Clear about both Weather and Climate?
I’ve put a lot of efforts into this. Thus, it’d better be. Just kidding.
