1. Data Sources:
Weather stations, radars, satellites, and other observing systems owned and operated by the government are some of the data collection instruments used. The data collected is very homogeneous and very much controlled.
- Apple iPhone Weather App:
The sources of data used in this report come from The Weather Channel which compiles data from different sources including official organizations, private stations, and people.
2. Forecasting Models:
Utilizes sophisticated NWP models that NOAA has developed. These models are always being fine-tuned and updated to enhance the correctness of the models.
- Apple iPhone Weather App:
The Weather Channel employs its own models which could have different algorithms, data assimilation, and interpretation as compared to the NWS models.
3. Update Frequency:
It provides new forecasts several times a day using new data and model runs. As for the frequency and the time of updates, they may differ.
- Apple iPhone Weather App:
The Weather Channel refreshes its data on a regular basis, but when the user of the app checks the weather, or how often the app is set to refresh its data may vary.
4. Localization:
Offers very detailed information, particularly through the WFOs that it has spread across the country.
- Apple iPhone Weather App:
Although it is more localized than the NWS, the level of detail may only be as good as the NWS in some areas.
5. Presentation and Interpretation:
Presents data in a technical manner where it may need the user to interpret it or get a meteorologist to do so.
- Apple iPhone Weather App:
This is an effort to make the weather information easier to understand and may include summarizing or averaging the data in some way.
